A Belgian Royal Wedding in Rome

Literally while the Belgian national team crashed out of the World Cup - how's that for a party bummer... - Prince Amedeo of Belgium, son of Princess Astrid of Belgium and Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este, married his longtime girlfriend Elisabetta "Lili" Maria Rosboch von Wolkenstein at the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere yesterday. Due to close relational ties Liechtenstein and Luxembourgish attendance at the Roman nuptials was numerous.

While advance reports had indicated that Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume would make his way to the Italian capital for the wedding of his second cousin (their grandparents were siblings), there seems to have been a bit of a name confusion. It was, in fact, Prince Guillaume, the Hereditary Grand Duke's namesake, uncle and godfather, who attended Prince Amedeo's and Lili's wedding. Also present were Prince Jean and his wife Countess Diane of Nassau. Curiously enough, I think I have also spotted Prince Jean's former wife Hélène Vestur in one of the pictures. It wouldn't be wholly out of question as she still also attends Luxembourgish family events. I'm told by someone who was in Rome that Prince Constantin, oldest son of Prince Jean and Hélène Vestur, was also present.

The by far largest contingent of Luxembourgish attendance came in the form of the Grand Ducal Family's very own Habsburgs. Archduchess Marie-Astrid, who is a first cousin of the groom's mother on her maternal side, and Archduke Carl Christian, who is a first cousin of the groom's father on the paternal side, brought along all of their children plus in-laws. Archduchess Marie-Christine and Count Rodolphe de Limburg Stirum, Archduke Imre and Archduchess Kathleen, Archduke Christoph and Archduchess Adélaïde, Archduke Alexander as well as Archduchess Gabriella represented the general dresscode confusion going on at the wedding. Long, short, hat, no hat, morning suit, business suit, everything was there. (Also there on the picture's far left, Archduke Franz Ludwig.)

Meanwhile on the Liechtenstein front, Prince Josef kept up that magical ability to avoid the cameras he acquired at the wedding of Prince Félix last year. However, Luxarazzi proudly presents the rest of his family, Prince Nikolaus and Princess Margaretha with their daughters Princess Maria-Anunciata and Princess Marie-Astrid. Maybe the reason for Prince Josef not being pictured together with his parents and sisters is a deeper one? He was present for the wedding rehearsal on Friday so unless he made a last minute exit he might have been part of the wedding party!?

Last but certainly not least based on the size of her serene highness' hat alone are Prince Philipp and Princess Isabelle. They don't share as close relational ties with the groom's family but are still on friendly terms. Plus being royals, they actually are related: While Prince Philipp is a great-grandson of Archduke Karl-Ludwig (1833-1896), Archduke Lorenz is a great-great-grandson of the brother of Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria. Other members of the Liechtenstein family present were Princess Thera and Princess Gisela, daughters of the occasionally featured Prince Michael.

More pictures of the wedding are located at PPE, APA, Getty Images, GVA and basically all over the (Belgian or royalty related parts of) the internet. For full coverage of the wedding including a guest list, check out The Royal Resource!

  1. I was hoping you would cover the wedding! Also I was wondering if there are any recent official photos of prince Joseph? Last time I saw a picture of him was 2012!
